Zocher had a nursery in Haarlem called "Rozenhagen" and gave Amy her own little garden in the nursery. She developed a love for gardening this way.

Career

At the age of 20 she decided to become an author because she wanted to teach girls in the cities more about nature. She wrote letters about nature starting in 1863 which were bundled in 1873 into a book: "In 't vrije veld. Brieven van een Landmeisje aan jongedames" After a poem of her - about the birth of the royal princess in 1880 - was published in a magazine, she started writing for different magazines. She used the alias Geertruida Carelsen because she didn't want to be recognized by friends or family. After the death of her parents she went to London in 1888 where she lived with her grandmothers family. She was the corespondent for a Dutch newspaper "Het Nieuws van den Dag". She also wrote a travelguide about London. In 1890 she changed location and went to Berlin. This time as corespondent for "het Utrechts Nieuwsblad" and "Het Nieuws van den Dag". She taught young reporters who came to her to finish their education and promoted education for women as correspondents and gardeners. She also was one of the first female memers of the "Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde". She returned to Haarlem after she retired as a journalist, wrote her memoires and kept gardening. She kept on writing for magazines .
